When Nili Cohen retired from her career as a teacher and school principal, she decided to volunteer as manager of the Tiberias branch of Yad Sarah. The choice was a natural one for her—when her own parents were ailing, the organization's services had supported Nili and her parents and she wanted to return the kindness.
Nili, a married mother of four, grandmother of 10 and great-grandmother of one, is often busy responding to ongoing requests for medical equipment. Her branch not only helps the physically challenged but also new parents who need equipment such as cribs for newborns, breastmilk pumps, and car seats.
She is proud that the services she and local volunteers provide are professional and given with love. Nili adds that Tiberias is a diverse city, and help is always offered without regard for religion or nationality.
Since it is also a popular city for tourism, visitors and tour groups arrive year-round. Many depend on Yad Sarah for necessary medical equipment they cannot bring with them. People with disabilities often order equipment in advance of their visit, and it is waiting for them when they arrive.
"The people who turn to Yad Sarah are received with great warmth, and we respond to each and every request with respect and a real desire to help," says Nili.
That warmth is returned, according to Nili. Although individuals are only asked to leave a refundable deposit for their equipment loan, they are so grateful that many often donate their deposit and some even decide to become volunteers. A local school included Yad Sarah in its presentation of various organizations that help the community, alongside the police and Magen David Adom. Additionally, money raised at a recent cake sale was donated to Yad Sarah as a mark of appreciation.
As Nili gives back, she enjoys connecting to the community and welcomes the opportunity to offer advice to clients that may benefit their future.
