The conflict in Israel doesn't only affect soldiers on the frontlines—it leaves deep emotional wounds for the loved ones supporting them from home.
"When we heard the news, our world turned upside down," said 75-year-old Yechezkel Yisraeli, who is the grandfather of Asaf – an IDF soldier who was severely injured in battle.
While fighting in Gaza, Asaf and his unit were attacked by grenades. Asaf sadly lost his right arm and was the only survivor of the attack. Despite his injury, Asaf refused to give up and is slowly recovering. "His resilience gave us strength," said Yechezkel. "When he hugged me with his left arm, it felt as though he was hugging me with both."
For grandparents of injured soldiers, like Yechezkel, the pain of seeing their wounded loved ones can be overwhelming. To better support these individuals, Yad Sarah launched a program that provides emotional support, connection, and healing. As part of this program, Yad Sarah hosts group therapy sessions, where Yad Sarah volunteers, social workers, and grandparents gather in support groups to share experiences and gain practical tools to cope as they support their grandchildren through the rehabilitation process.
"The gathering was incredibly emotional. Sitting with others facing similar challenges, sharing stories, and listening to one another—it's both encouraging and empowering," said Yechezkel.
