More than 27 years ago, Ilan Aviv completed basic military training and joined Mishmar HaGvul, Israel’s Border Patrol.
During his service, Ilan was involved in a devastating car accident. His truck overturned, and he sustained critical injuries. He was rushed to the hospital, where he spent a significant period recovering. He later developed a rare condition called Guillain-Barré syndrome, which affected his nervous system, and Ilan underwent nearly a year of respiratory therapy at Tel HaShomer Hospital. Despite these medical treatments, Ilan experienced irreversible damage to his nervous system and relies on a wheelchair.
Since Ilan’s accident, Yad Sarah has been by his side.
Through Yad Sarah’s accessible vans service, he receives transportation to Beit HaLochem for physiotherapy and free medication from Yad Sarah’s community pharmacy.
Ilan says that every time the Yad Sarah vehicle arrives beneath his building, he feels that he has not been forgotten.
Today, Ilan is almost 50 years old and lives in Holon with his father and brother. He is pictured above holding a photo of himself as a young soldier, a reminder of how far he has come with Yad Sarah’s support.
Yad Sarah’s wheelchair-accessible van service provides over 26,500 rides per year, ensuring that individuals in need have reliable transportation to medical appointments, school, work, family events, or social visits. Volunteer drivers at Yad Sarah work tirelessly to provide accessible transportation and help the people of Israel live as independently as possible.
